One of 7 races of giants catalogued here — a race or lineage, not a named individual. Named individuals are on Named Giants. The Watchers named as their fathers are under Fallen Angels and Grigori / Watchers.

The -im is the ordinary Hebrew masculine plural, the same ending as on Seraphim and Cherubim. Why these seven share it, and how Deuteronomy 2 sorts the post-Flood names, is on Races of Giants.

Hebrew anaqim (עֲנָקִים), the people of Anak. Anak is a man’s name; -im makes the people. Lexicons connect the name with “neck” or “necklace.” That is a word-history, not a stature.

His father is Arba, and Hebron was Kiriath-arba, the city of Arba (Joshua 14:15; 15:13). Three sons are named: Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai (Numbers 13:22). Caleb drove the three out of Hebron (Joshua 15:14). Joshua cut the Anakim off from the hill country; a remnant was left in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod (Joshua 11:21–22). Goliath is of Gath. His recorded height, and the shorter figure in other manuscripts of Samuel, stay on Named Giants, in the source’s own units.

The spies say the Anakim come from the Nephilim, and that beside them the Israelites seemed like grasshoppers (Numbers 13:32–33). The catalog follows that sentence in filing the Anakim as a post-Flood lineage of that descent, and it records that the sentence is the spies’.
