Guardians of the throne and of the way to Eden (Genesis 3:24), carved over the mercy seat (Exodus 25:18–22), and — in Ezekiel 10:20 — identified by the prophet himself as the same beings he had seen by the river Chebar in chapter 1. That identification is what merges the Cherubim with the Living Creatures.
Ezekiel 10:12 is where the eyes move onto the beings themselves: “their whole body, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels, were full of eyes round about.” Greek hymnography calls them polyommata, “many-eyed.” Scripture’s riding language attaches to them and not to the wheels: “he rode upon a cherub, and did fly” (2 Samuel 22:11).
Full of eyes - the many-eyed order, the Living Creatures, and the voice of God — six wings, eyes before and behind, Ezekiel’s wheels, and why one voice from the throne reaches a prophet as speech and a crowd as thunder.
