One of 7 races of giants catalogued here — a race or lineage, not a named individual. Named individuals are on Named Giants. The Watchers named as their fathers are under Fallen Angels and Grigori / Watchers.
The -im is the ordinary Hebrew masculine plural, the same ending as on Seraphim and Cherubim. Why these seven share it, and how Deuteronomy 2 sorts the post-Flood names, is on Races of Giants.
Hebrew emim (אֵמִים), from emah, “terror”: the fearsome ones. It is Moab’s name for the people who held that land before them (Deuteronomy 2:10–11): a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakim, and accounted Rephaim, as the Anakim.
The chapter’s point is precedent. Moab displaced them, as Israel is about to cross into Canaan. Genesis 14:5 already has the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, struck in the campaign of the eastern kings — the same campaign that strikes the Rephaim at Ashteroth-karnaim and the Zuzim in Ham.
