Also known as: Ophanim, Galgallim, The wheels, Erelim
Category: Angelic (heavenly)
Hierarchy & association: Tier 1 (1=Angelic, 2=Fallen, 3=Hybrid, 4=Giant lineage, 5=Human, 6=Other) · Angel association: heavenly.
The choir that Pseudo-Dionysius (Celestial Hierarchy, 5th–6th c.) filled with the Ophanim — Ezekiel’s wheels, galgallim, whose rims are “full of eyes round about” (Ezekiel 1:18). That is why this app carries Ophanim as an alias here.
Worth being precise about, because it is usually skipped: Ezekiel never calls the wheels angels. He calls them wheels, says one travels beside each cherub, and says “the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.” Filing them as an angelic order is a decision made about the text centuries later. The wheels, what they are and what the text refuses to settle, are worked through in full on the many-eyed panel.
Full of eyes - the many-eyed order, the Living Creatures, and the voice of God — six wings, eyes before and behind, Ezekiel’s wheels, and why one voice from the throne reaches a prophet as speech and a crowd as thunder.
