Asserted in tradition

Agent: Tvashṭā (Vedic); Yaldabaoth and the archons (Gnostic); Thoth / Hermes Trismegistus

Source / date: Rig Veda, c. 1500–1200 BCE; Apocryphon of John, 2nd century CE; Hermetica, 2nd–3rd century CE

Reference: Demiurge

Three traditions, one recurring figure: not the highest god, but a subordinate craftsman who actually fabricates living bodies — and in one case, a text that assigns each body part to a different named worker.

Class: Myth, epic or temple theology names a craftsman of living forms. Recorded, not tested.

Tvashtar, shaper of forms

In the Rig Veda, Tvashṭā is the divine artisan who fashions forms and who shapes the embryo in the womb. He makes Indra’s weapon; he is credited with giving living creatures their shapes and with bestowing offspring. The role is explicitly artisanal rather than sovereign — the one who does the fabricating, not the one who commands.

The archons, and a manufacturing list

Gnostic texts subordinate the maker of the material world to a higher, unknowable God. Yaldabaoth, the demiurge, fashions the physical body as a container for a spark that came from elsewhere. The Apocryphon of John takes it further than any other ancient text: it gives a long list of named powers, each assigned one specific part of Adam’s body to construct — one for the head, one for the eyes, one for the sinews, one for the marrow, part by part down the body.

Whatever the intent, the form of that passage is a division of labour across a build. It is the ancient text that most resembles a parts manifest.

Thoth and transmutation

The Hermetic corpus attributed to Thoth / Hermes Trismegistus supplies the principle that later alchemy ran on — correspondence between levels, “as above, so below”, and the transmutability of substances by one who knows the operation. Applied to living things, it becomes the claim that kinds are not fixed to anyone who understands the art.

The Corpus Hermeticum and the Emerald Tablet are both catalogued in this app as source documents under Kingdoms & Rulers, with their standing recorded there.
