The CRISPR era — and the one case that really was hidden

Precise, targeted, cheap editing of any genome, including the human germline. The premise of this section — that species are edited on purpose by someone the public cannot see — became literally true in 2018, and we know the name.

The tool
Dolly the sheep was cloned in 1996; the Human Genome Project finished in 2003; the first commercially approved engineered food, the Flavr Savr tomato, reached shops in 1994. Then in 2012 Jinek, Charpentier and Doudna showed that a bacterial immune system, CRISPR-Cas9, could be aimed at any chosen DNA sequence and cut it. Doudna and Charpentier took the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for it.
What changed was not the possibility — recombinant DNA was 1973 — but the precision and the price. Targeted modification of a named gene moved from a national-scale project to a well-funded laboratory bench.

He Jiankui announced that twin girls had been born from embryos he had edited at the CCR5 gene. He had done it in secret, outside the consent and review processes of his own institution and country, and the world found out after the children existed. In December 2019 a Chinese court sentenced him to three years in prison.
This is the anchor of the entire section, so it is stated without decoration: covert, deliberate, heritable genetic modification of human beings is not a theory. It has happened once that is confirmed, recently, and it was detected.
Both implications are real and neither cancels the other. The capability and the willingness exist — that is no longer arguable. And the case became known within weeks, through the ordinary machinery of scientific scrutiny, which is evidence about how difficult such a programme is to keep hidden rather than how easy.
