Domestication — species redesigned in the open
Agent: Farmers and herders, unnamed, across every inhabited continent
Source / date: c. 40,000 BCE (dogs, contested) to the present
Reference: Domestication
Humans have been rebuilding species feature by feature for thousands of years, without genetics, without microscopes, and without most people noticing it was happening. This is the largest programme of directed biological modification in the record, and its engineers are anonymous.
Class: Directed modification actually performed by people, on the record, with names and dates.
The scale of what was done
- Wolf to dog. One wild predator turned into everything from a chihuahua to a mastiff. Genomic dates range from roughly 15,000 to 40,000 years ago and remain contested; the outcome does not.
- Teosinte to maize. A Mexican grass with a dozen hard kernels became the corn cob, about 9,000 years ago in the Balsas river region. A small number of genes carried most of it — tb1 reorganised the whole plant architecture, tga1 stripped the stony casing off the kernel. Targeted change at a handful of loci, achieved by selection alone.
- One species, six vegetables. Cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and kohlrabi are all Brassica oleracea. Growers selected a different organ in each line — leaves, buds, flower head, stem — from the same wild mustard.
- Bread wheat is a hexaploid carrying three complete genomes from three species. The banana is a sterile triploid that cannot reproduce and exists only because people keep cutting and replanting it.
Why it belongs under “in the background”
Nothing about domestication was hidden. It was done in fields, in daylight, by ordinary people. And yet the mechanism was invisible to everyone doing it — no one who bred a better wheat for eight thousand years knew what a gene was, and no one recorded their name.
That is worth holding onto before reaching for a concealed agency. A programme can be enormous, deliberate, species-transforming and completely unperceived as what it is, without anybody concealing anything. Invisibility is not by itself evidence of a hidden hand.
