His skeleton was acquired by the surgeon John Hunter against Byrne's express wish to be buried at sea, and was displayed at the Hunterian Museum in London until its removal from display in 2023. In 2011 researchers extracted DNA from his teeth and identified a mutation in the AIP gene, tracing a shared founder mutation to families still living in the same part of Ireland. The one entry on this page whose cause is genetically proven.
