Every physical thing — every “it” — derives from binary answers to yes/no questions. Information is not a description of reality; it is what reality is made of.
Standing: A metaphysical model. Not constructed to be falsified, so ordinary physics tests do not apply to it.
Wheeler’s claim
“It from bit symbolizes the idea that every item of the physical world has at bottom an immaterial source and explanation.” Wheeler grounded this in quantum measurement: a property is definite only once a question has been asked of it, so the answer — the bit — is prior to the thing.
Wheeler is not a fringe figure. He coined “black hole”, worked with Bohr and Einstein, and supervised Feynman. This proposal is the speculative end of a career spent inside mainstream physics.
Its closest neighbour in this section
“It from bit” is the nearest mainstream relative of the CTMU’s core move. Both hold that information or cognition is the substrate rather than a description of it. Wheeler is filed as philosophical for exactly the same reason: it is a framework about what underlies physics, not a competing set of equations, and it makes no distinguishing prediction.
Holding them side by side is the point of this section. The difference between them is not the idea — it is the venue, the credentials, and the reception, which is precisely what the CTMU’s own page examines.
