Documented Mammals

Reference: Horse

The reference animal for prey vision and for limb reduction: each leg ends in a single toe, and the eyes see almost the whole world at once without seeing much depth in any of it.

Standing on one finger

A horse walks on the tip of its third digit. The hoof is a nail. The other digits are reduced to splint bones fused along the cannon, and the wrist is the joint people mistake for a backwards knee — it is not a knee, it is a wrist, and the actual knee is up against the body.

This is limb reduction at its most extreme in a living mammal: four limbs retained, everything within them stripped down to a single load path for speed.

Prey eyes

Eyes set on the sides of the head give roughly 350° of coverage with only a narrow band of forward overlap. The animal sees a predator approaching from almost any direction without moving its head — and pays for it with weak depth perception and two blind spots: directly ahead of the forehead, and directly behind.

Horses are dichromats, so red and green are not separable. And the eye is large, with a strong reflective layer behind the retina, which is why night vision is good and why sudden changes in light level are genuinely disorienting to them.
