Limbs — the four-limb constraint

Every land vertebrate that has ever lived has had four limbs or fewer. Not four as a common preference — four as an inherited ceiling that nothing has broken in roughly 370 million years.
One fish, and everything after it
The land vertebrates — amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals — are collectively tetrapods, and the name is the fact. They descend from a lobe-finned fish with two pectoral and two pelvic fins, and that count was fixed before anything walked. Everything since has worked by modifying the four, never by adding a fifth pair.
- Horse — four legs, each reduced to a single weight-bearing toe.
- Bat — four limbs, of which the front two are hands with enormously elongated fingers holding a membrane.
- Eagle — four limbs, of which the front two are feathered wings. It cannot grasp with them, which is why raptors carry prey in their feet.
- Whale — four limbs, of which the rear two have shrunk to a detached pelvic remnant buried in the body wall.
- Snake — four limbs lost entirely, though pythons and boas still carry vestigial pelvic spurs, visible on the outside of the animal.
Losing limbs is common. Repurposing them is constant. Adding a pair has never once happened.
Why this axis is the spine of the section
Because it makes a prediction that can be checked against any creature in this app, including the ones that were never caught: a vertebrate should never have four legs and two wings.
Score the dragon, the pegasus, the griffin and the sphinx on this axis and every one of them fails it, in the same way, by the same margin: six limbs. Score the phoenix and it passes cleanly, because it is a bird.
What that pattern shows is how the traditional creatures were assembled — a known animal with parts of another animal added to it, rather than a body plan built from the ground up. That is a statement about composition, not about whether the traditions are worth taking seriously, and this app takes them seriously enough to have catalogued them on the same axes as an octopus.
