Creature Design — shared attributes across the kinds

Designed Life asks who shaped biology. This section asks what the plan looks like — which attributes recur across unrelated kinds, how many times each was arrived at independently, and which combinations never appear at all.

Every creature below is scored on the same axes, whether it was caught in a net or recorded in a tradition. That is the whole method. Scoring a dragon on the same rows as an octopus is what makes the pattern visible.

The finding: no vertebrate has ever had six limbs

Every land vertebrate — horse, bat, eagle, snake, whale, human — inherits four limbs from a single four-limbed fish, and has for roughly 370 million years. Limbs get lost constantly and repurposed constantly. A pair has never once been added.

So every vertebrate wing is a forelimb that stopped being an arm. A bat flies on its hands. A bird cannot carry anything in its wings and grips with its feet. Flight is always paid for with arms — and that gives this section a test it can run against any creature in the app, including the ones nobody ever caught.

Run it, and the traditional creatures sort themselves. Dragon, pegasus, griffin, centaur and the Greek sphinx all carry six limbs and fail the same way. The phoenix and the Egyptian sphinx pass cleanly. The mermaid passes on limbs and fails on breathing instead.

A test everything fails tells you nothing. This one discriminates, which is why it is worth recording — and what it indicates is how the traditional creatures were composed: by adding parts of a known animal to another known animal. That is an observation about construction, not a verdict on the traditions, which this app catalogues in earnest elsewhere.

The design axes

Ten attributes every kind can be scored on. Each links to its own page.

Body plan Bilateral, radial, or none. Set once, extremely early, and almost never revisited.
Limbs How many, and what they became. The hardest constraint in the whole catalogue.
Wings Invented at least four separate times, out of four different materials, never as an extra pair of limbs in a vertebrate.
Respiration Lungs, gills, both, skin, air tubes, leaf pores — or, in a few vertebrates, no lungs at all.
Circulation How many hearts, how many chambers, and whether the blood is even red.
Vision Where the eyes sit decides depth; how many photoreceptor classes decides how many dimensions of colour.
Other senses Echolocation, electroreception, magnetic sense, infrared, and pressure at a distance.
Skeleton Inside, outside, water pressure, or stiffened cell walls.
Body heat Heat generated internally, or taken from the surroundings.
Reproduction Egg, live birth, seed, spore — and the kinds that do more than one.

Read the Limbs column top to bottom. Everything documented reads four or fewer, or six in the invertebrate whose wings were never limbs. Everything reading “six — four legs plus two wings” is a traditional creature.

The reference animal for prey vision and for limb reduction: each leg ends in a single toe, and the eyes see almost the whole world at once without seeing much depth in any of it.

Bat

The only mammal in true powered flight, and the clearest demonstration of what a vertebrate wing costs: a bat flies on its hands.

A skeleton of cartilage rather than bone, and a sense humans have no equivalent for: it can detect the electric field of a heartbeat.

Where limbs get lost, skin becomes a breathing organ, and heat is borrowed from outside.

Snake

A tetrapod that gave up all four limbs — and still carries the hardware. Pythons and boas have visible pelvic spurs on the outside of the body.

The one creature in this catalogue that genuinely has six limbs and wings at the same time — because it is not a vertebrate, and its wings were never limbs to begin with.

Dragon

The clearest case in the catalogue of the six-limbed problem: four legs and two wings, an arrangement no vertebrate has ever had — and the tell that the creature was composed by addition rather than described from life.

Six limbs without any wings involved — and a second problem the winged creatures do not have: it appears to carry two ribcages, and therefore two sets of lungs.

Anatomically legal. The phoenix is a bird, built on a bird’s plan, with a bird’s limb count. What is extraordinary about it is not its body.

Passes the limb test and fails a different one. Two arms and a fused hind limb pair is a legal count — the problem is breathing.

Growing this section

Axes worth adding next: lifespan and scaling (why a shrew burns out in two years and a bowhead whale lasts two centuries); regeneration (axolotls regrow limbs, we do not, and the difference is not the one most people assume); venom, arrived at independently more than a dozen times; and size limits, where the skeleton and respiration axes jointly set the ceiling. Creatures worth adding: the platypus, which lays eggs, lactates, and hunts by electroreception; the tardigrade; the Nephilim and giant lineages already catalogued under Named Giants, scored on the square-cube law rather than on limb count — that is the axis on which recorded giant heights actually turn.
